Meal & rest break compliance

Every break is timed against California's meal and rest break deadlines automatically, with premium pay calculated the moment a shift closes — not weeks later during an audit.

What's tracked on every shift

  • A first meal break is required once a shift runs past 5 hours, must start by hour 5, and must last at least 30 minutes.
  • A second meal break is required once a shift runs past 10 hours.
  • Rest breaks are required on any shift of 3.5 hours or more — roughly one 10-minute break for every 4 hours worked.
  • If a meal or rest requirement is missed, the system calculates the applicable premium hour automatically and attaches it to that day's pay record.

How it works

Break start and end times come from the same kiosk punches used for time tracking, so there's no separate step for employees or managers. As soon as a shift closes, that day is checked against the meal and rest requirements for a shift of that length, and any premium pay owed is calculated and itemized — visible on the employee's pay stub, not buried in a payroll adjustment.
